If you would have told me this time last year that we would be selling our farmhouse, packing up, and self-building a barndominium I would have said you were crazy. But, I would have also said BRING IT ON!!
When I say that building and creating is my therapy, I really and truly mean it. There is just something about getting your hands dirty, figuring out things, constantly learning, and DOING things you had no idea you had the capability to do! It is EMPOWERING!!
I wish I could explain how good it feels to walk into any home improvement store and not look lost anymore. To really have creative juices flowing as you walk up and down every isle and as a woman being able to tell the many men (that mostly mean well), 'No, I don't need any help!' 💪🏼👩🏼🔧
So, fast-forward to today and well, here we are! We are just beginning our journey and we couldn't be more excited... and nervous... and in all honestly a little scared! We know everything isn't going to go right, heck, things already haven't but we (my hubs and I) are resilient and neither of us knows how to give up!
We 'broke ground' about two weeks ago. My husband has been having the time of his life knocking down trees and clearing our land. It use to be an old dairy farm and I cant wait to show you all the cool things he keeps digging up! ANDDDDD, it has two beautiful, overgrown, just ready to be rehabbed, SILOS!!! (I know, I know, I am no Joanna Gaines but I am so excited to get my hands on them!!)
As my hubs has been working hard at the property I have been researching, adding myself to barndo groups on Facebook, finding an ah-mazing barndo community on Instagram, and learning all that I possibly can! Even though I have almost a decade under my belt in the new home construction industry, barndo design and building is very different.
We are currently working with an architect to finalize our building plans (insert overly excited Jaclyn face), just had soil testing for the septic completed on Wednesday, and we are working on getting fill dirt brought in to raise up the building pad. Earlier when I said things already haven't gone right, well, that is because we HOPED we would be able to install a conventional septic ourselves. That has now turned into a very expensive engineered septic that has to be put in by professionals, so no money saving DIY allowed here. BIG HIT to our budget, but we made some adjustments and we are making it work.
This was just a quick, Saturday morning post before we get ready for another showing, fingers crossed it sells soon!! I can't wait to share this journey with you all, hopefully encourage you to make big moves even when you are scared, and become inspired- become inspired to do absolutely anything you put your mind to!
I absolutely love chatting about everything DIY and home improvement, so come say hi to me on Instagram and Facebook or leave a comment below.
Remember... Don't Be Afraid of a Little DIY: I believe that you can turn your house into a beautiful home, all you need to do is get your hands dirty one project at a time.
