Do you remember the first time you were in art class and there was a blank canvas in front of you? You really and truly could freely paint whatever you wanted? Well, welcome back to art class, kids, because the possibilities are endless, and you have the unique opportunity to design a barndominium space that truly reflects your needs and lifestyle. And I, for one, thinks that is one of the MOST EXCITING pieces of building a barndominium!

If you're in the process of crafting your barndo floor plan, here 5 quick things to consider when designing your floor plan:
1. Barndominium Size and Layout:
Your barndominium should be a reflection of your lifestyle.
Do you dream of a vast, open-concept living area where you can entertain family and friends? Or do you envision cozy, intimate spaces that offer privacy and comfort? Think about whether you'd like separate rooms like a distinct kitchen, living room, and dining area, or if an open layout suits your style better.
2. Bedrooms, Bathrooms, and Beyond:
Beyond the basics of bedrooms and bathrooms, consider the unique spaces that will make your barndo feel like home. Perhaps a home office for those work-from-home days, a dedicated homework nook for the kids, or even a half-bath conveniently located for guests when you're entertaining. In our barndo we decided on a Monitor style so we could add an open-air loft that will double as my home office and a guest room with the ah-mazing new Murphy Bed I found on Facebook Marketplace!!

3. Storage Solutions:
Storage is often overlooked, but it's essential for a clutter-free and organized home. Dream big with walk-in closets, spacious pantries, or even a dedicated storage room. If you're leaning towards an airy loft design, think about where you'll store items typically kept in an attic. And don't forget about practical spaces like hall closets or a mechanical room. As Allison Bailes of Energy Vanguard wisely said, "If you have any say over the amount of space for the mechanical systems, please make it a mechanical room. A little closet simply is not adequate if you want a high-performance home."
4. Embracing the Outdoors:
If you're someone who loves the outdoors, think about how you can seamlessly integrate this into your barndo design. Whether it's a sun-soaked deck, a serene patio, or even a playful dog run, ensure it's harmoniously connected to the interior, offering easy access and beautiful views.
5. Budgeting by the Square Foot:
One of the most practical aspects to consider when designing your barndominium is the price per square foot. This metric can be a game-changer in understanding the overall cost of your dream home. While it's tempting to go all out with design features and spacious rooms, it's essential to balance your desires with your budget. By having a clear idea of the cost per square foot, you can make informed decisions about the size, layout, and features you want to include. Remember, it's not just about the space, but how you utilize it. With smart planning and a keen eye on your budget, you can maximize every square foot to create a barndo that's both beautiful and cost-effective. After all, a dream home is one that doesn't break the bank!
Take inspiration from historic transformations, like the one undertaken by Stephen Peck, who breathed new life into an old barn. With careful planning and consideration, your barndominium can be a perfect blend of functionality and style, a true testament to your vision and lifestyle.
Remember, this is your dream space. By considering the points above and infusing your personal touch, you'll craft a barndo floor plan that's uniquely yours. Happy designing!
