Don't Start a DIY Home Improvement Project Without Reading This First

Updated: Dec 29, 2022

When you want to improve your home but aren’t sure where to start, it can be overwhelming—there are so many options! But if you’re considering taking on a DIY home improvement project yourself, don’t start until you’ve read this first. This guide will walk you through the steps of preparing for your home improvement project, choosing and acquiring the right tools, and knowing when to call in an expert when something goes wrong.

Finding Inspiration

Pinterest anyone?? I LOVE Pinterest and it is my GO-TO for saving DIY tutorials and DIY inspiration! Without people like me, sharing the knowledge and advise they have, there is NO WAY I could have completed any of my home renovation projects.

Another great way to learn and research is on INSTAGRAM! You can follow your favorite Instagram Influencers for tips and tricks, inside information, video tutorials, the list goes on. Some my favs on Instagram are Vintage Revivals , Angela Rose Home, and Sarah Fogle with Ugly Duckling House.

Tools of the Trade

No matter what home improvement project you're undertaking, there are certain tools you'll need to get the job done. Check out my blog on DIY Renovations: Tools of the Trade.

Stay Motivated

No one ever said that renovating your home was going to be easy. In fact, it's probably one of the most challenging things you'll ever undertake. But that doesn't mean you should give up before you even start.

Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated throughout your DIY renovation project:

1) Set achievable goals - You will not be able to keep your motivation if you set unrealistic expectations for yourself. It is important that you set achievable goals in order for your motivation not to wane.

2) Find something that motivates you- There are many different things that can motivate someone. Find what motivates you and use it as an inspiration when you feel like giving up on your project. *My motivation is that amazing feeling I get when a project is completed and I can say, "holy crap, I just did that!" lol

3) Create an environment around yourself- Create a space that is filled with positivity, affirming words, inspiring people, and whatever else will help you feel confident and capable of giving your best self.

Safety First

When embarking on a home improvement project, it's important to keep safety in mind. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while renovating your home:

  1. Wear safety glasses and hardhats when needed.

  2. Wear boots with a steel toe.

  3. Use heavy duty gloves that are hard to rip or tear.

Start With an Easy Task

You're standing in your kitchen, looking around at the peeling paint, warped countertops, and outdated appliances. You've been wanting to renovate for years, but you don't know where to start. If you're considering a DIY home improvement project, there are a few things you should do before you begin. One is figure out what needs to be done first. For example, if you want new cabinets and new counters installed in your kitchen, then you need to start with removing the old ones and figuring out how to install the new ones. Once that's done, then you can focus on painting or resurfacing those cabinets. Then comes the countertop installation. Finally, once all of that is complete, you can look into getting new appliances. It may seem like a lot of work now, but it will go much more smoothly if you break it down into manageable little projects!

Clean Up as You Go

And one final tip: always clean up as you go! Not only will this make the job easier as you progress, but it will also give you a sense of accomplishment along the way.
