Transformation Tuesday: Farmhouse Kitchen

As a homeowner, you might be looking at your builder-grade kitchen and wishing for something more stylish. I know we were and I am here to tell you that it is possible to turn your builder-grade kitchen into the farmhouse kitchen of your dreams!

The moment we moved in, we immediately knew we wanted to renovate the kitchen. And with a little convincing and some beer and pizza, we were able to turn our dream into a reality. We had friends that were in the middle of transferring with the Navy and they stayed with us the first week, so we all teamed up to tackle the kitchen renovation project together, it was a fun bonding experience and made the process much more enjoyable.

Here's a quick rundown of what we did to give our half bathroom a complete makeover

  1. Painted all the cabinets: We painted all the cabinets with a fresh coat of paint in a beautiful farmhouse white color. This simple update made a huge difference in the overall look and feel of the kitchen. (See DIY tip below so you don't do what we did!)

  2. Custom faux brick backsplash: I added a custom faux brick backsplash to give the kitchen a touch of character and charm. This was a bit of a DIY project, but it was worth it in the end. We used 3'x5' wall panels and painstakingly made sure that the seams and bricks matched up after cutting them. Let's just say we had to buy two extra boards because we cut them incorrectly the first time.

  3. Built the cabinets up to the ceiling: To add some height we used MDF and wall trim to build the cabinets up to the ceiling. This was a bit of a challenge, but the end result was worth it.

  4. Replaced the outdated light with recessed lighting: I replaced the outdated light with recessed lighting, which not only made the kitchen brighter but also added a modern touch.

Overall, we are thrilled with the way our kitchen turned out. It's now a stylish and functional space that we are proud to show off to my guests. If you're thinking about giving your builder-grade kitchen a makeover, I hope this article has given you some inspiration and ideas to get started.

DIY Tip: Only use cabinetry paint! Trust me, I learned this the hard way. I tried repainting our cabinets twice using regular wall paint, thinking I was saving money. However, it just ended up costing me more in the long run because the paint didn't hold up well and I had to repaint again. Cabinetry paint is more durable and resistant to wear and tear, making it a better choice for a high-traffic area like a kitchen. It also typically has a smoother finish and dries faster than regular paint. Save yourself lots of time and money by using cabinetry paint. Trust me, it's worth the investment!!

It can be a big project, but with a little planning and creativity, you can turn your kitchen into something that you'll absolutely love. It's so rewarding to see the transformation and it's a great way to make your house feel more like a home. So go ahead, give it a try and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice, we are all in this together!
