Are you thinking about giving your kitchen a makeover? Whether you want to do a complete renovation or just want to update your space, there are a few things you need to do before you get started.
Do it yourself home renovation can be an incredibly satisfying experience, but it can also feel like a daunting task if you’ve never done it before. Fortunately, there are numerous tools and resources available to help make the process of renovating your kitchen easy and affordable. Whether you want to replace your countertops, update your cabinets, or revamp your appliances, there are plenty of ways to go about doing it without breaking the bank.
Follow these seven tips to get started on your own kitchen renovation on a budget!
Tip #1 - Decide what your budget is and stick to it!
The first step is to create a budget. Once you know how much money you have to work with, you can start brainstorming DIY ideas and projects. This may be a no-brainer to most, but honestly, it is the MOST OVERLOOKED step in renovation projects, especially DIY reno projects! DIY projects are far less costly then hiring a professional, however, the trade off is the time you will invest in the project.
Tip #2 - Find DIY ideas online or in books to help save money on the project.
The use of social media, peer-to-peer forums, etc. you can learn just about anything you want! YouTube and Instagram also is great places to find DIY and home renovation influencers who can give you tons of money saving tips.
PRO TIP: Always research multiple websites/professionals/influencers. This research can provide you with insights into current design trends, multiple ways to save money, and what NOT to do to lose money on a project.
Tip #3 - Create a list of the things you need and want in your new kitchen.
I am a firm believer in making lists. Lists on lists on lists! lol When I begin a new home renovation project I create a project list that is broken down into multiple categories. I do this so I can have a clear understanding of all of the costs that will go into the project.
Needs (must haves) for project
Wants (dream list) for project
Items on hand
Itemized materials list to purchase
Tip #4 - Research what style you want and get inspiration from magazines, online, or friends' homes
Pinterest anyone?? I LOVE Pinterest and it is my GO-TO for saving DIY tutorials and DIY inspiration! Without people like me, sharing the knowledge and advise they have, there is NO WAY I could have completed any of my home renovation projects.
Another great way to learn and research is on INSTAGRAM! You can follow your favorite Instagram Influencers for tips and tricks, inside information, video tutorials, the list goes on. Some my favs on Instagram are Vintage Revivals , Angela Rose Home, and Sarah Fogle with Ugly Duckling House.
"I believe that everyone should be able to transform their house into a beautiful home. No matter what your budget. You just need to be willing to get dirty because in here we aren't afraid of a little DIY." – Jaclyn Crosby Home
Tip #5 - Roll up your sleeves and ask family and friends for help before you start the project.
Even if they can't be around to give you hands-on assistance during the entire renovation, asking them if they can help will allow you to complete this daunting task without getting too overwhelmed!
Do as much of the work yourself as possible to save on labor costs but ALWAYS hire a professional for plumbing and electrical needs!
Tip #6 - Find creative ways to reuse or repurpose existing materials whenever possible.
Reusing what you already have is the MOST COST -EFFECTIVE way to SAVE MONEY on a home renovation project. Want new cabinets? Try sanding and painting them. Don't want the builder grade nickel finish faucets anymore? Use a durable spray paint and paint them gold or even black.
Tip #7 - Shop around for appliances and fixtures, and consider used or refurbished items to save money.
I have three, yes three, Habitat for Humanity stores within 30 minutes of me! To say that makes me happy is an understatement. I am that girl that spends HOURS in Habitat. Sometimes I go with a project in mind, hence why it is on this list, but I also like to go when I need a creative boost!
Look at my sweet teenager that I drag along with me when we go thrift shopping! She always finds a place to sit because she knows we will be there a while.

Remember...Everyone is fully capable of making a home a reflection of themselves even if you are on a budget. And I hope somewhere along the way I can help empower and inspire YOU to Get Dirty Because In Here We Aren’t Afraid Of a Little DIY!
