Budget Curtain Styling: It's in the Details

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

Curtains are pretty much a 'must' in most rooms. Not only do curtains bring the room together but it can also help with heating and cooling your home and lets face it, I love to save money any way I can!

Hang Curtains like a Pro!

1. Position curtains 2/3 of the distance between the top of the window and the ceiling or as high as the crown molding for a more dramatic look. Keep in mind if there is a lot of space between the top of the window and ceiling it may look odd to mount it near the crown molding.

2. Mount the rod hardware approximately 4-6" outside the width of the window and make sure you don't extend the pole to its limits or it will sag in the middle. General rule of thumb is the rod will be 10-12" wider than the window.

2. Curtain length is IMPORTANT for the overall look! Puddling allows an extra 2-4" to 'puddle' on the floor will give you a more dramatic look. Breaking the floor allows for an extra 1-2" to barely break the floor but give the curtains movement. Kissing the floor will allow the curtains to hang perfectly at the floor. (You have to be extremely accurate with measurements to achieve this look.)Floating is the last technique that I use when I don't want the curtains to touch the floor. When 'floating' curtains you want 1/2-1" just above the floor.

4. Always consider the style - grommet, top tab, rod pocket, pleated, curtain rings, or one of my favorites; DIY hooks! When making this decision take into consideration if the curtains will always be drawn or open and for display. If your curtains will be open, don't skimp on material.
