Learning is like building a house. It happens slowly, board by board. But when you get to the end, a strong and sturdy building is on a solid foundation.
Yes, Even You Can DIY!
If you are ANYTHING like me, the 'starting point' is what gives me the most anxiety. This guide will walk you through the steps of preparing for your home improvement project, choosing and acquiring the right tools, and knowing when to call in an expert when something goes wrong. Here are 9 steps to follow before you start your next DIY home improvement project.
Step 1: Finding Inspiration
Pinterest anyone?? I LOVE Pinterest and it is my GO-TO for saving DIY tutorials and DIY inspiration! Without people like me, sharing the knowledge and advise they have, there is NO WAY I could have completed many of my home renovation projects. Visit my Pinterest page here!
Another great way to learn and research is on INSTAGRAM! You can follow your favorite Instagram Influencers for tips and tricks, inside information, video tutorials, the list goes on. Some my favs on Instagram are Vintage Revivals , Angela Rose Home, and Sarah Fogle with Ugly Duckling House.
Step 2: Setting up Shop
If you're planning on taking on a home improvement project, you'll need to gather all the tools and materials you'll need before you get started. This will help you avoid making multiple trips to the store and will save you time and money in the long run. Then find the perfect place to set up. I've used my front porch, back deck, on the floor in the room I am working on, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that you set up in one spot and have everything you need there.
Step 3: Tools of the Trade
No matter what home improvement project you're undertaking, there are certain tools you'll need to get the job done. If you're planning a DIY renovation, make sure you have a few of my favorite tools on hand. Please note that not all of these are needed for every project but this is my 'toolbox basics'.
Step 4: Stay Motivated
No one ever said that renovating your home was going to be easy. In fact, it's probably one of the most challenging things you'll ever undertake. But that doesn't mean you should give up before you even start.
Starting to feel frustrated? TAKE A MINUTE AND BREATH! Better yet, walk away from the project completely for a day or two, especially if you are in the weeds and feeling defeated. Sometimes all we need is a little time to regroup, research some more, or just take a break. Believe me I have at least one really good break down per project. Sometimes that means a paint brush will go flying or sometimes that means I am so overwhelmed and lose all confidence in my abilities and just slump down and cry. All of it is OK!! And, your in good company - WE ALL DO IT!
When you think about it, a renovation changes so much more than an old house – it adds life to days, brightness to nights, and even creates a story to tell. - Unknown
Step 5: Get Organized
Getting organized and staying organized is so important! You'll need to know what you're working with before you can start making changes. That means taking stock of your space, evaluating your needs, and creating a plan of attack. Once you have a clear idea of the scope of your project, it's time to start gathering supplies.
I am a firm believer in making lists. Lists on lists on lists! lol When I begin a new home renovation project I create a project list that is broken down into multiple categories. I do this so I can have a clear understanding of all of the costs that will go into the project.
Needs (must haves) for project
Wants (dream list) for project
Items on hand
Itemized materials to purchase
Step 6: Break Up Big Projects into Manageable Small Ones
Any home improvement project, no matter how small, can be daunting. That's why it's important to break the task into manageable steps that you can complete one at a time.
For example, you are renovating your bedroom (that's the BIG PROJECT). You want to paint the walls, add an accent wall, pull out the old flooring, reorganize the furniture, and bring in some new diy décor (these are the little projects). Of the little projects what is something you know, without a doubt, how to do? Start with that first. Even if it is a bigger little project. Starting off with something you already know how to do will help boost your confidence in completing the entire project!
Step 7: Safety First
When embarking on a home improvement project, it's important to keep safety in mind. Make sure to have the proper safety equipment so you don't hurt yourself or others while working. And I have to be honest - I am not the best at practicing what I preach and I have learned that I've got to be better about protecting myself.
Safety goggles/glasses
PRO TIP: They make prescription safety glasses for those of you that are blind like me!
Sound Protection
Dust mask or respirator
Push stick for table saws
Heavy duty gloves (Bonus if you can get cut resistant gloves!)
Step 8: Start With an Easy Task
You're standing in your kitchen, looking around at the peeling paint, warped countertops, and outdated appliances. You've been wanting to renovate for years, but you don't know where to start. If you're considering a DIY home improvement project, there are a few things you should do before you begin. One is figure out what needs to be done first. For example, if you want new cabinets and new counters installed in your kitchen, then you need to start with removing the old ones and figuring out how to install the new ones. Once that's done, then you can focus on painting or resurfacing those cabinets.
Step 9: Clean Up as You Go
And one final tip: always clean up as you go! Not only will this make the job easier as you progress, but it will lower your frustrations and give you a sense of accomplishment along the way. And, hint, hint... that helps with your motivation!
