Any home improvement project, no matter how small, can be daunting. That's why it's important to break the task into manageable steps that you can complete one at a time.
You're standing in your living room, looking around at the peeling paint, warped trim, and outdated furniture. You've been wanting to renovate for years, but you don't know where to start. If you're considering a DIY home improvement project, here's how to renovate any room in your home without going crazy in the process.
Breaking up doesn't have to be hard to do
Let's say you are renovating your living room (that's the BIG PROJECT). It may seem like a lot of work now, but it will go much more smoothly if you break it down into manageable little projects like:
paint the walls
pull out the old carpet
reorganize the furniture
add an accent wall
paint the brick fireplace
Breaking down renovation projects into smaller, more manageable projects will help you avoid stress and procrastination.
Where do I start?
If I told you at the end, would you think I was crazy? Maybe? Well, the end is where you have to start! Every project has a final goal so starting at the end and working backwards will help you figure out the little projects that have to be completed to meet that goal. Figuring this out in the beginning will keep you motivated and on track.
What's next?
Now that you identified the little projects, break those little projects down into micro projects. Ugh.... why?? Well, a few reasons. 1) because this will give you goals to meet in a very short amount of time and 2) if everything I read on Google is true, this gives you a sense of satisfaction and the human mind really likes being satisfied. So every micro project goal you meet turns into a little project goal meet and equals a whole lotta satisfaction! ;)
It may sound so time consuming but I promise if this work is completed on the front end, it will save you SO MUCH TIME and ANGER and FRUSTRATION during the project!
OK, Jaclyn, I have my projects identified. Now how do I 'really' start?
Well, that is easy! Which little project do you already know how to do? Just start with that. In our example above your renovating a living room. Do you know how to paint? Start with the walls or brick fireplace. Do you know how to sand wood? Start by refinishing one of the piece of furniture. Are you feeling strong today? Start by ripping up the old carpet. Starting off with something you already know how to do will help boost your confidence and give you a sense of accomplishment along the way.
